Shelly Bay: Big Read: Long shadow over development of Wellington jewel Shelly Bay

Dear readers, in the Dominion Post today an excellent in-depth article on Shelly Bay. It has extensive background and history of the area and parties involved and leads up to a good summation of the saga to date. It is close to the 400th story written on Shelly Bay by the paper.

It should have been so simple.

On one hand was an iwi, historically wronged, which bought a prime Wellington harbourside site using money obtained to right – in some small way – past wrongs.

On the other was a developer with a track record, eager and willing to work with iwi to develop the site complete with 350 apartments and townhouses, hotels, a rest home, a ferry terminal, a marina, and a possible cable car link to the hill above.

Instead, what happened was Shelly Bay.
